Up Board: Hearsay Trial Produces Hearsay Verdict

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – The board of the United People (UP) party on Friday said that the hearsay trial of party founder Theo Heyliger resulted in a hearsay verdict, and hopes Heyliger’s legal team appeal the verdict forthwith. We are disappointed, but the fight is not over, the board said.

The board in its response to the verdict in the Larimar Case maintained its position that despite years of creating negative and false impressions about Heyliger, the prosecutors office did not present any physical evidence of wrong-doing.

Instead, the board said, what the prosecutor and now judge went with the “gospel word” of nefarious Dutch contractors and a middle man who was given a deal to testify against Heyliger as a crown witness.

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – Former member of Parliament Theo Heyliger was found guilty of accepting bribes from Dutch consultant Ronald Maasdam at the courthouse in Philipsburg on Friday afternoon. He was also found guilty of laundering almost USD 4 million at the expense of the taxpayer.

Adjustments Made To Phased Reopening

PHILIPSBURG--Several adjustments have been made to the phased reopening plan of the country, with several businesses added and shifted within the reopening schedule.

Additionally, as of May 18, for Phase 2 of the reopening, businesses will be allowed to open from 6:00am to 8:00pm, from Mondays to Fridays. Businesses will continue to remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays to allow Collective Prevention Services (CPS) to conduct its community outreach programme to identify potential COVID-19 cases in the various districts.

Businesses added to the Phase 2 reopening schedule which goes into effect as of May 18 include dental services; taxis, which will be required to operate at 50 per cent capacity; horticulture establishments, such as flower and gift shops; and musical instrument, stationary and office supply stores such as dollar stores, so that children can have materials to work with should any school decide to reopen Read more

Gendarmes Maintaining Controls On Cross-Border Travel, Two New Cases Confirmed.

MARIGOT:--- The Prefecture of St. Martin and St. Barthelemy issued a press release on Sunday addressing the border controls that were lifted by the Dutch authorities even though there are still active COVID 19 cases on both sides of the island.
The press states that even though the French side began its deconfinement measures there is the resurgence of new cases, two of which were confirmed and another two probably cases, therefore, the Prefecture of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthlemy is strengthening its call for utmost vigilance to avoid the resumption of the epidemic.
Based on the data thus far including the new case brings the cumulative numbers to 40 confirmed cases since the first case including two active cases and two that are hospitalized in the COVID-19 unit that are awaiting results.
