Obama Meets Castro In Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba – “This is a new day between our two countries,” President Obama said after meeting with Cuban President Raúl Castro in Havana.

The two leaders agreed that there are still deep fissures between the two countries and that a healthy relationship between them will take work.

That uneasiness was apparent as soon as journalists began asking questions. Obama and Castro were not supposed to take questions, but a last minute change made that possible.

In Spanish, a journalist asked Castro why his country kept political prisoners.

Clearly miffed, Castro asked the reporter to hand over a list of political prisoners.

Over 40 Volunteer To Refurbish Ewp Playground Built In 2004

CUL-de-SAC – The initiative, a collaboration between the Rotary Club of St. Martin Sunrise and the Participant Foundation, is to refurbish the existing playground at Emilio Wilson Park (EWP) to realize a vibrant children’s playground, and family recreational space at the park.

There are currently few public playgrounds, and limited facilities on the island that cater to outdoor activities, which the whole family, particularly children, could enjoy.

Plenary Session Of Parliament About Consumer Protection For Tuesday

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – The House of Parliament will sit in a plenary public session on March 22. The Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Telecommunication and Transport will be present for the session.    

The plenary public meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 2.00pm in the General Assembly Chamber of the House at Wilhelmina Straat #1 in Philipsburg.

The first agenda point is incoming documents.  The second agenda is a discussion with the Minister of Tourism and Economic Affairs regarding the issue of consumer protection for residents and visitors.

National Institute Of Arts Gymnastic Competition

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — On Saturday March 19th, the National Institute of Arts in collaboration with Club de Gym St.Martin will present part 2 of the 2nd Annual Gymnastic Competition at the Asha Stevens Christian Hillside School Campus in Cay Hill. 50 students born during the years 1998 to 2008 will compete in a parcours that covers gymnastic apparatus of floor, uneven bars, horse and balance beam.

The 2nd Annual Gymnastic Completion is the qualifier to compete at the Regional Competition that will take place in Guadeloupe.

Willemstad:--- The Board of financial supervision Curaçao and Sint Maarten has issued a positive advice on the 2016 budget of Curaçao. The Cft deems the budget realistic and there are visible signs of economic growth. Measures that were taken previously by the social funds prove to be effective, although some risks can still be perceived. Up till now it seems that last year finished with a small surplus. Cft has advised Curaçao to continue on the current path of realistic estimates and the further improvement of its financial management, so all budgetary documents can be timely discussed and approved.

Smmta Informs Boaters About Anchoring In Maho Bay.

PHILIPSBURG:--- The St. Maarten Marine Trades Association (SMMTA) is working with the Sint Maarten Civil Aviation Authority to make sure that boaters are aware that there have been many complaints from concerned stakeholders about vessels with high masts mooring just outside of the yellow buoys in Maho Bay to observe the landing aircraft at the Princess Julianna International Airport.
The Civil Aviation Authority is concerned because sailboats’ masts are posing a hindrance to landing aircraft on runway 10 and the Department of Civil Aviation, Shipping and Maritime Affairs has on several occasions had to call the Coast Guard to escort vessels from the area in question.
While vessels are currently allowed to navigate and anchor outside of the yellow buoys in Maho Bay, the Civil Aviation Authority would like boaters’ cooperation in staying clear of the approach area for airplanes landing at Princess Julianna Airport, especially if they are sailboats because of the potential danger their masts pose to the aircraft Read more
