ST PETERSBURG, Russia--It was two minutes before midnight when Russian President Vladimir Putin finally entered the meeting room in the Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library, more than three hours late, to be interviewed by a dozen exhausted journalists.

His retinue seemed wearily accustomed to the late-night regimen, but Putin himself - after back-to-back meetings, a speech and an on-stage interview at his annual business conference here in his home town of St Petersburg - was fresh, fulsome and feisty Read more

Gearing up to a new era of colonialism and nepotism

Dear Editor,

Lately, our representatives seem to worry a lot -and sometimes rightly so- about the Dutch (post) colonial powers. So far, the apogee of this independence rhetoric came to light when an MP was quoted as saying that he would rather “die on his feet than live on his knees”. The MP was quick to forget that Dutch PM Rutte already indicated that independence is just a phone call away.

So why so much noise? It is nothing more than putting up smokescreens in order to derive the attention from the real problem, namely the new era of (corporate) colonialism and nepotism which is upon us Read more

Canada Conservatives lose another minister ahead of October election

OTTAWA--Canadian Industry Minister James Moore announced on Friday that he would leave politics, the third surprise departure from Prime Minister Stephen Harper's cabinet as the ruling Conservatives head for an October election trailing in the opinion polls.

Citing personal reasons, including "some difficult news" about the health of his disabled son, Moore said he would not run for re-election, but believes Harper and his nine-year-old right-leaning government would prevail.

"I have every confidence that Prime Minister Harper and our Conservative government will be re-elected, and I wish I could be part of the next Conservative government," Moore said in a Facebook posting.

"With health challenges in my family, I have concluded it is impossible for me to seek another term in office," Moore said.

Opinion polls show Harper's government has slipped behind the left-leaning New Democratic Party in a tight three-way race just four months before the national vote Read more

Insulted daughter-in-law

Dear Queenie,

My father-in-law is always making remarks about how one of our children doesn’t look anything like my husband. He seems to think that means the boy isn’t really my husband’s son.

The fact of the matter is that the boy looks a lot like my husband’s mother, but my father-in-law hasn’t noticed that, or if he has he never says anything about it. Instead he keeps saying things that imply that I cheated on my husband, which never happened.

Queenie, how can I shut him up?—Insulted daughter-in-law

Dear Insulted,

It is nearly impossible to shut up someone like that, but if your mother-in-law is ever around when Mr Read more

BRUSSELS, Belgium--Minister Plenipotentiary Josianne Artsen signed on the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) Sustainable Energy Roadmap on behalf of government on Thursday. The roadmap was the end result of the Summit of the OCTs Energy Ministers in Brussels, Belgium, from June 16 to 18.

The roadmap facilitates and supports the path to lower fossil fuel dependency, and increases energy efficiency to further assist OCTs in the transition to sustainable energy.

OCT governments agreed at the summit to support the development of an OCT Sustainable Energy Roadmap to help reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and improve their energy efficiency.

A selection of the identified sustainable energy priority areas for the Caribbean OCTs and a proposal for a possible joint project were shared with the participants of the summit.

The Energy Summit gave OCTs the opportunity to provide guidance regarding sustainable energy priorities for the Thematic Programme (16-18 million euros) under the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).

Sustainable energy was identified as an essential area of cooperation at the OCTs Ministerial Conference, held in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, on February 26.

Families of South Carolina church massacre victims offer forgiveness

CHARLESTON, South Carolina--As the young white man charged with murdering nine people inside an historic black church in South Carolina stood blankly silent during a court hearing on Friday, relatives of slain worshippers addressed him one by one, offering tearful words of grief and forgiveness.

Dylann Roof, 21, who authorities say spent an hour in Bible study with parishioners at the nearly 200-year-old Emanuel African Methodist Church before opening fire on them, stood quietly, stoically, as he appeared via video feed for an initial bond hearing before a magistrate judge.

Dressed in a black-and-white prison uniform and flanked by two guards in body armour, Roof showed no reaction as the judge ordered him held without bail Read more
