124 Students Approved For Government Scholarships

PHILIPSBURG--Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs says some 34 students will be travelling to The Netherlands on Sunday, July 31, to further their studies. The Ministry of Education received 182 requests for study financing this year, of which 124 were granted, 51 were denied and seven are pending.

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — One hundred and twenty four study financing applications have been granted out of a 182 submitted applications this year, disclosed Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs at the Council of Ministers Press briefing. What is being applied currently is that former workers of St. Maarten (South), who earned a pension due to their years of work over here and now living on French St. Martin, would get a reduced amount in pension, solely because they reside "across the border".

Somewhat understandable, SZV management had a lot on their plate and this issue was not a priority.

Priest Calls On Minister Meyers To Provide Answers On Dump

PHILIPSBURG – Recommendations that the intended Waste-to-Energy plant be built in the Cay Bay area to allow easier transfer of the electricity produced by the plant to the grid of NV GEBE, that the communities in Philipsburg be educated on actual conditions of the dump and that an escape plan be introduced in the event of a disaster, have been put forward to VROMI Minister Angel Meyers by the One St. Maarten People Party (OSPP).

The OSPP also proposed town hall meetings outlining the various solutions that are being tabled.

Leader of the OSPP Lenny Priest said he learnt from media reports that date back to May 2016, Minister Meyers visited a Renewable Energy Facility in West Palm Beach and a Waste-to-Energy Plant in New York, with the intention of constructing a Waste-to-Energy plant.
