PHILIPSBURG:--- To observe the anniversary of the partition of the island of St. Maarten / St. Martin, the students of the M.A.C. Browlia Maillard Campus, and the Aline Hanson School in Sandy Ground participated in a friendly running race to reenact aspects of the legend or myth of how the island was divided.

The activity, which was held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, from 8:30 am – 10:30am, saw the participation of more than 160 students from both the northern and southern side of the island.

The primary goals of the race were to promote cooperation between education institutions on both sides of the island; to develop cooperation based on our common history, to create student ambassadors of peace and friendship to promote UNESCO’s international values; to strengthen students’ sense of belonging to a “Friendly Island”; to inspire social cohesion by uniting citizens from various backgrounds; and to promote a healthy living style through engaging in sport activities.

St. Maarten News – The signing of the necessary documents to initiate the start of the completion of the new Government Building situated on Pond Island is certainly a step in the right direction and according to Minister of Finance Richard Gibson Sr, such a move will save the Government 300,000 guilders per month.

St. Maarten Debaters Off To Medgar Evers College, New York

Minister Jacobs Explains Why School Bus Tender Was Suspended

PHILIPSBURG – Minister of Education Silveria Jacobs explained the rationale for the Ministry suspending the tender with school busses on St. Maarten.

The Ministry and School Bus Owners Association (SBOA) have been in discussion about a change in government policy governing the functions of school busses. Initially, the SBOA was against the proposed changes in regulations, arguing this would affect the livelihood of the bus drivers.

However, the Minister argued that the changes were necessary to create a more efficient and cost effective system and proper accounting of public funds.

Minister Jacobs explained that in the past the Ministry of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Traffic and Telecommunication (TEATT) would have negotiated with the bus drivers, however, it was always the Ministry of Education that had to pay the bill Read more

Ninety Teachers Attend Digikidz Conference

St. Maarten News – Approximate ninety educators from Seventh Day Adventist and both Hillside Schools, Asha Stevens and Helmich Snijders Campuses, came together last week Thursday for a day-long DigiKidz conference, organized by Foresee Foundation, the executor of the DigiKidz project in collaboration with the tech teams, management and school boards of all three schools.

The theme of the day was “the way forward” assisting schools in how to further develop the integration of ICT and Technology in its schools and classrooms.

St. Maarten News – The messy situation with garbage collection got uglier yesterday after reports that All Waste in Place, the company responsible for collecting garbage in Philipsburg, has approached shopkeepers to sign individual contracts. Without these contracts, garbage will not be collected downtown.

Pondfill Ring Road Foot Bridges Have Lost Their Shine

St. Maarten News – Back in December 2012, with the festive season around the corner, then Prime Minister William Marlin ordered public works to build three foot bridges across the ditch that separates the unfinished ring road from the Walter Nisbeth road.

The landmass created by the ring road track was designed as a parking area – and it still functions as such today.

In 2012, the foot bridges were in a mint condition, but the past forty months they have taken serious hits from the weather conditions.
