Editorial - Maturity required

Thankfully, a majority of the fractions in the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament rejected the idea floated by the liberal democratic VVD and Socialist Party (SP) for a commonwealth with St. Maarten, Aruba and Curaçao as independent countries (see related article). It was pointed out correctly that the right of self-determination recognised by the United Nations (UN) in principle lies with the islands, not the Netherlands.

None of the three territories has called for independence officially, and historically it is up to the colonised rather than the coloniser to opt for changes in that relationship Read more

Beach entry technically reopens, need for legislation highlighted

BELAIR--Property development representatives technically have reopened the entryway to the Belair beach after it had been closed off on the morning of December 1, preventing public access to the beach.

However, the “No trespassing” and “Private property” signs remain, and another one even has been added since Tuesday, on a tree directly in line with the only entryway, a footpath (see Tuesday edition of The Daily Herald).

The newly-fixed fence has been drawn back to technically allow foot access, although this can be considered a “mental barrier,” according to the Beach Access Policy Read more

KPSM team leaders graduate from special leadership course

Some twenty police team leaders and acting team leaders received their certificates on November 29, for the leadership course they took last summer. All officers received their certificate from David McGregor, senior trainer at the UTS Training and Development Centre (TDC).

During the course, the officers learned not only the technicalities of leadership and the structure of communication skills, but they also learned how to manage and support their team members into making their working days as productive and challenging as possible.

All graduates were congratulated by TDC, the management team of KPSM and, from a distance, by Angela Dekker, member of USONA, which financed the "Management Development Training." Dekker couldn't personally attend the ceremony, because she was off island.

Facilitator McGregor addressed all students and talked about how the group had first arrived as cynical and hardened officers, with many years of service, and yet they opened their hearts quickly to the spirit of good leadership and motivational management.

McGregor said that he saw changes within the personality of most of the officers, who started to appreciate that their staff are people who need to be developed, encouraged and validated Read more

Access to Belair Beach shut over disagreement

A shut and repaired gate and fence closing off access to the Belair beach is clearly marked with “No trespassing” and “Private property” signs.

BELAIR--The entryway to the Belair beach was shut off yesterday, December 1, in a move spurred by the owners upset about the planting of palm trees on the beach.

It would appear, based on the “For sale” signs up until recently and the newly-repaired fence and gate, that the property directly in front of the shore was sold to new owners who did not know the rule that beaches have to be accessible to the public.

However, the property was taken off of the market and is still under the same ownership, as confirmed by Tendal Real Estate which had advertised the property for sale.

The owners, the Pavan family, live in Venezuela Read more
