Walichi Basketball Association Honors Women For International Women’S Day

PHILIPSBURG – The Walichi Basketball Association (WBA) took time out on Sunday, March 13, before game 1 of the Ladies Basketball Championship (LBC) finals to honor these women for their contributions to the league and the community in honor of International Women’s Day this past Tuesday, March 8.

Inocencia Leonard of Leonard Enterprise was thanked for being the main sponsor of the league this year and for consistently giving back to the youth and community. Emilie Beencha, secretary of Thunderz Basketball Club, was honored for being the secretary of the club, in charge of the girls, being part of the club for 5 years, and being part of female basketball development.

PHILIPSBURG:----  Sint Maarten’s community came out in full force for the second annual SXM DOET event held on March 11th and 12th. Around 1000 volunteers successfully completed 43 projects registered by 30 various organizations from all around the Dutch side of the island. The SXM DOET team was thrilled to see that so many organizations and volunteers that participated last year signed up for SXM DOET 2016. A number of new organizations joined in on the cause, which the team had hoped for, increasing the number of projects and thus the positive effects of SXM DOET on the community at large.

No Date Set Yet For Continuation Of Budget Dabate

Lee Investigates Cases Of Youth Falling Ill

PHILIPSBURG – Minister of Public Health Emil Lee dispatched a team of persons of the Collective Preventive Services (CPS) under the leadership of Dr. Asin to assess and investigate complaints regarding several young people, who were participating in the Leeward Islands Debate competition, becoming ill during the past 2 days.

Most of these persons were staying at the Maho Reef Resort, but some residents reportedly also fell ill.

The Minister was apprised of the situation on Friday evening, February 26, by President of Parliament Sarah Wescott-Williams, who was at the event.

Lee has already received the first briefing by his Department, and Wescott-Williams has requested that he urgently inform Parliament of the initial findings by letter, and subsequently keep Parliament informed of developments and ongoing investigations.

Exclusive: William Brooks Approved Back-Pay For His Brother That Amounts To Over Naf 12,000.00.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Based on information reaching SMN News states that the former temporary manager William Brooks also approved NAF 12,000.00 which is "back-pay" monies he believed is owed to his brother from the year 2009. The source said that the payment is currently on hold while the internal audit is busy investigating some of the decisions taken by William Brooks while in office. SMN News further learnt that monies paid to Brooks was not due to him because he had some severe issues with the former management some of which ended up in court.

Finally, Upgrading Work In Dutch Quarter To Start Late 2016, Early 2017

DUTCH QUARTER, Sint Maarten –– Upgrading work in the Dutch Quarter district will officially begin late 2016, into 2017, with the awarding of the contract to contractors in November.

Prime Minister William Marlin explained this at the symbolic signing for the project to upgrade the infrastructure of Dutch Quarter on Monday, February 8, in the presence of Incoming Ambassador to the European Union representing the Dutch islands Jernej Viditic, and Minister of VROMI Angel Meyers.

The Prime Minister stated that the project was signed by then Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams some three years ago, when he was Minister of VROMI.
