HARBOR VIEW—Chairwoman of the Social Economic Council (SER), Oldine Bryson-Pantophlet, welcomed the Chairman of the SER of Suriname, Ferdinand Welzijn on Tuesday May 17th.

The Chairlady congratulated him on being the latest addition to the family of social economic councils in the Caribbean and Latin America region.

As of April 2016 Suriname has re-established its SER. 2010 was the last year that the SER was active, during the tenure of former president of Suriname, Ronald Venetiaan.

Council Of Ministers Meets With Social Economic Council

GREAT BAY, Sint Maarten (DCOMM) – On Thursday, May 28, 2015, the Council of Ministers (COM) met with the Social Economic Council (SER), which is one of the permanent advisory councils of St. Maarten in accordance with article 79 of the Constitution.

The aim of the SER is to facilitate and promote discussions between social partners in order to reach consensus regarding social economic issues before they are regulated in policy or law.

During the meeting the SER presented and informed the Council of Ministers of their work and the progress made since the first SER Board was appointed per national decree on May 1, 2011.

The SER has provided solicited and unsolicited advice to the Government and to Parliament as requested over the years and submitted advices on topics like the Monetary Union, Guest Tax, Counterpart article of the National Ordinance Foreign Labor and A mandatory pension for Sint Maarten.

As a result of the meeting, the SER and the Government will look into strengthening their cooperation and collaboration concerning social economic issues.

Ser-Member Reed Strikes Back At Tuitt

St. Maarten – William Reed, a senior member of the Social Economic Council (SER) has reacted angrily to statements made by former finance Minister Roland Tuitt about a SER-advice that criticizes Tuitt’s decision to take tax debts from 2006 and before off the books. The SER called the policy rules Tuitt published in the National Gazette on May 24, 2013, “unlawful.”

Yesterday, Tuitt stated in this newspaper that the SET had been used as “a political football” in writing its advice.

PHILIPSBURG--Senior policy advisor of the Social Economic Council SER Arjen Alberts has filed a petition with the Civil Service Court against Minister of General Affairs Sarah Wescot-Williams.

In the petition, which was filed Wednesday, Alberts seeks the annulment of his suspension from his job as per April 29, and payment of study and travel expenses.
