Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) leader Member of Parliament (MP) William Marlin will be meeting with Governor Eugene Holiday today, Monday, on the formation of the new majority coalition in Parliament.
The meeting is on request of Governor Holiday. The Daily Herald understands that Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs also is scheduled to meet with the Governor earlier in the day on the Council of Ministers’ National Decree for the dissolution of Parliament and the calling of new elections on December 8.
The United People’s (UP) party-led coalition lost its majority support last week Wednesday when a surprise motion of no confidence was passed against the Gumbs cabinet by eight MPs who later formed the new parliamentary majority comprising former United People’s (UP) party MPs Silvio Matser and Maurice Lake; NA MPs Marlin, Silveria Jacobs, Christophe Emmanuel and George Pantophlet; Democratic Party ((DP)) MP Sarah Wescot-Williams; and United St. Maarten (US) party MP Frans Richardson.
The MPs who form the new coalition said in a Governing Accord they signed and submitted to Holiday last Wednesday that they had reached an agreement in principle on the formation of the next Government of St. Maarten.
In reaction to the changes in Parliament, the Council of Ministers submitted a National Decree to the Governor calling for the dissolution of Parliament and the calling of new elections on December 8. Gumbs also has maintained that he and the other members will not resign.
