PHILIPSBURG:--- The fuss about the screening of candidate ministers, has to do with the shroud of secrecy surrounding the screening process. SMCP believes that if the government were more transparent concerning the screening criteria as well as the process there would be a lot less speculation concerning who passed and who failed the so-called screening test. Before accepting a ministerial nomination prospective ministers and their families should know what is expected of them.
The screening of ministers dates back to pre-10-10-10 when the Island Council approved the law on the Promotion of the Integrity of Ministers Read more

PHILIPSBURG:--- As the high tourist season is here and Christmas is just around the corner, I would like to advise both the Dutch and French Governments to start implementing short and long-term solutions to ease the traffic situation on both sides of the island.
I think it is high time we address our traffic bottlenecks with quick wins to ease the traffic congestion for the Tourist during the Christmas season.
On the Dutch side, a short term solution is to make the Ring road drivable by fixing the road all around the pond and put proper signs from the Soualiga Roundabout, behind Ketty's Snack to inform motorists they can use this alternative route to ease the traffic flow on the Pond fill.
You will be amazed a lot of motorists don’t know the road is open for vehicular traffic but the road needs to be fixed as soon as possible of potholes for the Christmas season.
Another short term solution is to make a filter lane by the intersection by Zagersgut before you reach the bridge by the Seventh Day Adventist Church Read more

St Vincent Opposition Party Selects New Leader

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent  –  Lawyer and four-time Member of Parliament, Dr. Godwin Friday, was elected to lead the main opposition New Democratic Party (NDP), when he garnered the support of his colleagues in a vote on Thursday.

This paves the way for him to be sworn in as leader of the opposition.

This development comes just two days after Arnhim Eustace, who led the NDP since October 2000 and became opposition leader in March 2001, told the NDP’s central committee that he is stepping down from both posts.

Following Friday’s selection, a letter was sent to Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne informing him of the development as well as a communiqué stating that Arnhim Eustace had formally resigned as leader of the opposition.

It was widely speculated that Friday, who along with MP for the Southern Grenadines, Terrance Ollivierre, were elected in March 2001, making them the longest-serving opposition MP’s after Eustace, would have defeated the other two contenders for the position – the MP for Central Kingstown and fellow NPD vice president, St Read more
