CAY HILL--A “facility agreement” amongst several parties committing to provide financing loans to fund the construction of a new general hospital for St. Maarten was signed between St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) and the financing partners on Friday.

PHILIPSBURG--Ten days after his arrest, United St. Maarten (US) party leader Frans Richardson was released from pre trial detention on Friday– three days before the parliamentary elections, which he is contesting as the number one candidate on the US slate.

He remains a suspect in the “Squid” and “Emerald” investigations. In a press release issued after his release, Richardson’s attorney Sjamira Roseburg of Sulvaran & Peterson Law Firm, said her client’s detention was not necessary at this time and indicated that his detention seemed to be aimed at undermining his campaign and intended to influence the outcome of Monday’s snap parliamentary elections.

Unesco Donates $50,000 To Public Schools

PHILIPSBURG –  UNESCO has approved $50,000 for the purchasing of learning materials for Public Education that were damaged by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.

The learning materials that are being referred to are: textbooks, workbooks, and physical education materials. The learning materials are from the different subject areas from the national curriculum such as: English and Dutch language arts, science, and physical education.

PHILIPSBURG:--- Former Prime Minister William Marlin says the move by the government to launch something as important as the National Employment Registration Drive this coming Monday, the day of the snap parliamentary elections, seems untimely, illogical and a distraction.
