MARIGOT:---The French Carnival committee (FCDSM) members held elections for a new Executive Board during their annual general meeting on Monday, June 26th, 2017.

Luciana RASPAIL, who has been the General Secretary of the committee from 2013-2017, has been elected as the incoming President of FCSM for the next 3 years. MARIGOT—The 2016 French-side carnival was officially launched on the waterfront last night with Territorial Councillor in charge of culture affairs Rollande Questel handing over the symbolic key to carnival committee President Jean-Philippe Richardson.

Two taxi drivers receive tokens of appreciation

MARIGOT--Taxi drivers Anthony Lewis and Augustin Bernard have been recognised by St. Martin Tourism Office for the excellent work they do in welcoming tourists to the island.

The pair received tokens of appreciation from tourism office President Jeanne-Rogers Vanterpool and Director Kate Richardson at a press conference Friday, as taxi association representatives looked on.

It was noted Augustin Bernard, taxi driver since 2001, received a Certificate of Excellence from TripAdvisor two years in a row on behalf of his team at Bernard Tours, while numerous positive comments have been posted about Anthony Lewis on TripAdvisor.

Gwo Ka Drum fest epitomises best of Creole folkloric culture

MARIGIOT--The first Gwo Ka Drum Festival held in Marigot over the weekend was hailed by organiser SOS Radio as a great success, with at least six invited groups from Guadeloupe and St. Martin performing Saturday and Sunday to a capacity crowd on both nights.

The event held in the Lazy Bay car park honoured the late cultural icon Juliette Mingau who was well known for her work with the Grain D'Or dance group.

The groups comprised Ti Fey La Ka Soné, the only one from St. Martin and an exponent of "modern" Gwo Ka using guitar and bass, an all-women group Kalbaska, youth group NJK, all-male group Kalbaska, Lammoufanmka, and Soley Nwè.
