Marlin Hopes To Have Governing Program Finalized By Oct. 27

PHILIPSBURG – A governing program should be in place by October 27, before the swearing in of cabinet and the parliament by October 31, according to Prime Minister William Marlin.

The Prime Minister, speaking in Wednesday’s, October 5, Council of Ministers Press briefing also hopes that all documents would have been submitted for the screening of candidates to the Governor.

“There is also other documentation that every candidate Minister has to submit as part of the screening, which is a CV, bank accounts, they have to declare whatever assets they have in excess of 20,000 guilders so it takes a while to accumulate the information and to actually evaluate the information,” Marlin said.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister disclosed that the two political parties that have committed to form the government: the United People’s Party (UP) and the National Alliance (NA), have exchanged manifestos and hope to form a governing program by October 27.

“The process is being worked on to come to a governing program and just like it was with the formation of red, white and blue, we hope like in 2014 to have a fully worked out detailed program by the 27th so that too can be submitted along with the report of the formateur with the completion of my task as the formateur Read more

Construction Work Continues On Government Building

PHILIPSBURG – Even though the Council of Ministers has moved into the new Government Administration Building, there are still some inconveniences to endure as all the documentation has still not completely moved into the new building.

“It is somewhat getting used to the location. It’s like you hit the ground running when functioning in the office, but with part of the support still being in the (old) building and other buildings, you feel somewhat at times disconnected because you can run downstairs and book a document, and run downstairs and get a document Read more

Marigot:--- The Our Land Matters initiative held its first rally on October 2, 2016 in the Boo Boo Jam area. The rally was a mixture of speakers calling citizens of Saint Martin to unite and stand for their rights. Echoing at what was once an area for locals to congregate and enjoy Saint Martin was the need to re-open Boo Boo Jam Saint Martin style. The rally drew a large crowd that listened keenly to the words of local activists, grass root Saint Martiners and long-standing Boo Boo Jam patrons who are concerned about what is taking place on their beloved island Read more

How Important/Valid Is Your Vote?

PHILIPSBURG:--- I know before hand that this topic will be somewhat controversial but allow me to express what I saw on election night when the time came to start counting thE ballots.

Throughout the campaign season, many candidates were faced with hearing from most persons just how disgruntled they became and were actually considering not going out to vote. It was difficult, but all parties tried our best in explaining just how important voting is and why every vote matters.

While at the Dutch Quarter Community Center I saw something that I honestly couldn't believe Read more

Another Coalition Government For St. Maarten --- Stability Not Guaranteed With New Elections.

Alleged vote buying rampant on Monday.

PHILIPSBURG:--- The early elections called by the Governor St. Maarten, when it was requested by former Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs, did not change anything for St. Maarten, instead it opens the door for more instability. Another very unfortunate situation the election called on September 26th created was vote buying by at least one particular political party who also even refused to comply with the laws laid down by the Minister of Justice Read more

For resident Jefferson George, voting today meant exercising his right and guaranteeing himself a say in how the island is run.

“Now that I vote I can have a say, I can complain. If I didn’t vote, I would just have to accept what they give,” George told 721news.com.
