Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
CYRUS WATHEY SQUARE--Those who fought and gave their lives in World War II (WWII) so we may live free will be remembered in a solemn ceremony on Captain Hodge Wharf on Monday, May 4, starting at 9:00am. The wreath-laying ceremony is open to the public.
Slated to attend the observance are Governor Eugene Holiday, Parliament Chairman Dr. Lloyd Richardson and other Members of Parliament, Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs and other ministers.
An honour guard comprising uniformed officials from various parts of the justice chain will be inspected at the wharf by Governor Holiday, Dr. Richardson and Gumbs.
Many men and women from the Dutch Caribbean Islands took part in the fighting in Europe to see the liberation of not only the Netherlands but the wider continent from the yolk of the Nazis.
WWII started in 1939 and ended in 1945. It has been described as the most widespread war in history. More than 100 million people served their countries in military groups. Some 50 to 70 million people lost their lives making WWII the deadliest conflict in human history.
