Senatorial candidates to declare candidacy September 8th to 12th
Source:
The Daily Herald
03 Aug 2014 04:19 AM
MARIGOT--The Préfecture announced that official declarations of candidates for the upcoming Senator Elections will take place from Monday September 8 to Friday September 12 from 8:00am to 6:00pm. The election takes place on Sunday September 28 from 8:30am in the Prefecture of St. Martin and in the annex of St. Barths. In case of a second round, declaration of candidates will be submitted on the same day of voting, September 28, until 3:00pm when results will be announced. All information relating to declaring candidacy, eligibility, and other information can be obtained on the Website of the Prefecture www.saint-barth-saint-martin.pref.gouv.fr/ The same information can be obtained from the election services of the Prefecture at Tel. (0590) 29.09.21. Louis Constant-Fleming was the first Senator of St. Martin under the new status up until his retirement. Currently First Vice-resident
Guillaume Arnell
and Patricia Chance-Duzant have announced their intention to run for Senator, while the rumour mill also has President of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council Georges Gumbs and
Alain Gros-Desormeaux
in the running. The position of Senator is not restricted to elected officials only. Candidates must be at least 24 years old (age eligibility was modified in 2011), they must have satisfied obligations of national service, have a capacity for civil service and not be under any kind of supervision, and free from any condemnations from the court that would prevent them inscribing on an electoral list or becoming a candidate for election. In France Senators are elected for a mandate of six years and the Senate (upper house of Parliament ) is renewed by half every three years. This year the election will renew 178 parliamentarians.
