Cooperating Foundations issues grants to three local foundations

PHILIPSBURG--Recently, Cooperating Foundations, a funding agency assisting non-governmental organisations (NGOs) with social project funding, presented checks to three different foundations.

All three foundations share the common objective of offering projects to the local St. Maarten community, hence creating opportunities and enhancing the well-being of certain groups in our society.

The Foundation Judiciary Institutes Windward Islands SJIB received a grant of NAf. 2,800 for starting with an art therapy project for children who need some extra assistance in social-emotional guidance. Through the purchase of art materials and the training of social worker and initiative taker Nathaly Pieters, SJIB will be able to offer a fun-filled programme where children can express themselves through the visual arts.

The "Beyond Writing" Foundation, under the leadership of Loekie Morales, received NAf. 3,600 to set up a pilot storytelling programme for hospitalised children. On a weekly basis, children at the St. Maarten Medical Center are entertained by volunteers. Through storytelling, reading and some extra attention by exchanging thoughts and feelings, an effort is made to make children's stay at the hospital more comfortable. This programme is also being extended to some community centres on the island.

Last, but not least, and being the largest project, the Philipsburg Jubilee Library received NAf. 34.558 for the recently held Summer Camp musical "Anansi and the Salt Pond." Approximately 25 children under the guidance of National Institute of Arts (NIA), student Iris Hakkens, the library and volunteers practiced for a number of weeks on a daily basis during the summer break and closed off their summer experience with two great performances at the Cultural Centre.

Cooperating Foundations is proud to be able to help positive social initiatives and is looking forward to receiving more funding requests from local foundations and associations.
