Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG--Seasoned civil servant Henrietta Doran-York was elected as new President of Windward Islands Civil Servants Union/Private Sector Union (WICSU/PSU) on Friday.
Doran-York won with 133 votes, while the other candidate Denisio Conner secured 71 votes. Doran-York, who succeeds Dearie Leonard to take over the helm of the union, declined to comment on winning the presidency on Friday evening, saying she would issue a statement over the weekend.
Also elected to the executive board were new treasurer Francisco Mariana and new General Secretary Riegnald Arrindell, each of whom secured 140 votes.
St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius union members voted in the election. None of the votes cast in St. Maarten were invalid. However, seven votes from Statia and two from Saba were deemed invalid.
The election was held at the WICSU/PSU office on Walter Nisbeth Road (Pondfill) from 7:00am to 4:00pm. A mobile election vehicle also went around the establishments with WICSU/PSU members to give those who were working and could not leave their places of employment a chance to cast their ballots.
The election was overseen by a committee comprising Chairperson Belinda Bryson and members Julia Solognier, Leron Mardenborough, Franklin Cuffy, Rico Carty and Maria Jones.
Leonard said the election process had been smooth and transparent. She congratulated the new executive board on their election and said they would be installed next week.
