PHILIPSBURG:--- The Sint Maarten Lions Club was chartered on December 12th, 1970, and will celebrate 50 years this coming Saturday. The idea for starting a Lions Club on Sint Maarten was initiated by the late Lion Donny Bakhuis, who was a government auditor and visited the island for work from the Federal Government in Curacao. The Club was eventually chartered by the Bonaire Lions Club with Lion Ben Vlaun serving as its first Lion President with 22 Charter members.

Since this was the first service club on the island in 1970 it took some time for the community to understand and accept this service club concept, because it was not a religious, fraternal, or political organization Read more

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — On March 14, 2020, St. Maarten closed its borders, due to the effects of COVID-19 and a partial restriction was announced. With the island still bearing the effects of the pandemic such as business closures, the economy has drastically declined and it is further projected to have continued adverse effects on the major economic pillar, tourism.

The government of St. Maarten has, for the short-term, initiated food boxes for persons in need. Due to the overwhelming need for sustenance, lack of capacity and limited resources, a more sustainable plan is warranted to support vulnerable groups Read more

Uwi And Usm Sign Mou Marking Historic Solidarity In The Caribbean

POND ISLAND-- University of St. Martin (USM) and University of the West Indies (UWI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) marking a historic partnership between the two universities.

USM after a decade of working in close partnership with UWI Open Campus, expressed an interest in joining UWI global system which includes joint centres with ten international universities, USM announced in a press release on Saturday.

The UWI Council discussed the concept note and approved it in principle earlier this year, asking Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and his team to develop a road map with a full proposal for further consideration.

That process began with the signing of an MOU between the two universities on Wednesday, October 7.

Vice-Chancellor of UWI, Professor Sir Beckles and Valerie Giterson-Pantophlet, President of the Board of USM met virtually to sign the MOU which marked a historic partnership, not only between the universities, but significantly for the framework for collaboration and regional development now established between the Dutch Caribbean and English-speaking territories of UWI.

As an Economic Historian, Professor Sir Beckles brought context to the importance of the occasion, noting that after 528 years almost to the date, of Christopher Columbus entry into the region on October 12, 1492, that this is A historic and courageous project that seeks to reverse the legacies of the Columbus project, to put those legacies behind us so that we can go forward as one people, one sovereign nation, one civilization Read more

Islandpreneur Live 2020 Attracts 650 People In 35+ Countries

Organizers to start Islandpreneur Network based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback.

Great Bay, St. Maarten Islandpreneur Live 2020 was a success. This 3 day virtual summit attracted 650 registrants from more than 35+ countries,  of which the majority were Caribbean countries.  Unexpected, were those who attended the summit from India, Brazil, Morocco, and Austria. A world map highlighting where registrants came from and a listing of the countries were shared on the last day of the summit.
