Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG--Together We Can Foundation announced on Wednesday that it plans to grant a full highschool scholarship to the highest-scoring pupil of the 2015 foundation based education (FBE) exams.
This, the Foundation said via press release, is the mere reason of holding the Battle of The Fittest Tournament, amongst other types of fundraisers. “This tournament will take place in the month of July and we are encouraging companies to make a donation. Proceeds of these events will go towards the scholarship fund and other social projects we intend on executing in the near future.â€
The foundation said that it hoped to be able to assist many more pupils in the future, possibly all who score a certain grade point average (GPA), if the foundation manages to raise sufficient funds.
The pupil earning this scholarship would also have to maintain good grades throughout high school.
“We want to give low-income students who are really smart an equal opportunity to succeed,†said Foundation President Maria Richardson.
“Helping high-ability students with financial need fulfil their potential has significant implications for the social mobility among St. Maarten’s lower-income families and for the strength of our economy.â€
Richardson added that financial support and a happy home contribute to enabling them to enter top colleges and universities, which will in turn contribute to a safer country and better chances for the youth.
“The longer smart, poor kids stay in school, the less likely that they are to remain at the top of their class,†Richardson said. “That’s a repudiation of the society we live in, and the Together We Can Foundation is determined to do everything we can to turn that around. Their financial background should not be the reason they fail!â€
