Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
GREAT BAY, St. Maarten - United St. Maarten Party ((USP)) candidates; Rueben J. Thompson (#4) and Leona Marlin-Romeo (#2) have combined forces to champion the cause of protecting, preserving and properly managing Sint Maarten's Natural and Cultural Resources that form part of our Heritage.
Thompson; who is an environmentalist, comes with a wealth of experience in the field of conservation. He is currently the Project Manager of Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) and is also the former Vice-President of the St. Maarten Pride Foundation and Founding board member of the Emilio Wilson Estate Foundation (EWEF).
Marlin-Romeo is also no stranger to the conservation field as she is the current Chair of the Monument Council of Sint Maarten; which is tasked with protecting the monuments on the island.
Both candidates are advocates for including standardized local heritage education in the school curriculum, the establishment of the Emilio Wilson Estate as a protected area and the restoration of Fort Amsterdam, just to name a few examples.
"Our heritage is our inheritance, it must be protected because it serves as a reminder, a marker from how far we have come and what we have achieved as a people," the two said in a joint statement.
"We must remember where we are coming from, to know where we are going and it with this in mind that is why we stand together as a party and as a team, united in protecting our most valuable asset, our heritage, because long after we are gone, our heritage will remain to remind our future generation of what we have accomplished."
The United St. Maarten Party believes that having Thompson and Marlin on the team is a crucial factor in ensuring that challenges concerning the management of natural and cultural heritage and the environment are properly addressed and resolved.
