Reaction to letter of Mr. Sneek

Source: The Daily Herald 07 Aug 2014 07:26 PM

Dear Editor,

The letter by Mr. Koos Sneek in your edition of Thursday, August 7, begs a reply. Mr. Sneek should stop his lying. He says "when in 2010 the island had opted for the status of public entity" The island never opted for that status. So that is a lie.

His lies go on and on, but they are just political rhetoric, because of the upcoming elections. Not worth pointing out. But this one above is a deliberate misconstruction of the truth. That says something about how to trust everything else Mr. Sneek says.

It seems Mr. Sneek wants Statia to continue to be a beggar, at the mercy of his fellow countrymen, instead of a situation where the island has more control over its own affairs. Why doesn't he want a referendum? Most likely because he is a coward: afraid that the people of Statia are going to prove that he is making things up, that they will demonstrate they do not need him to put words or thoughts in their mouths or brains, but that they know how to use their own voice and mind. Yes, Mr. Sneek: that may be something new for you.

It seems that Mr. Sneek and his party, the DP, do not realize that they are undermining their own statements by being against a referendum. Because, if they are so convinced of their own right, they would not be afraid of a referendum. But they are. So point proven: they know they are wrong.
