DUTCH QUARTER--The West Indian Village, welcomed as a positive cultural and family-friendly development, was inaugurated on the evening of Friday, January 30, amongst dignitaries, community members and other supporters in the heart of Dutch Quarter.

Owner Henry Lynch was praised for his vision, passion and tenacity in initiating the project and carrying it through to fruition in various speeches by dignitaries, friends and colleagues.

The Village features eight white-framed, brightly coloured wooden structures all serving local and regional food, a sheltered airy space with benches and leisure amenities, and an outdoor playground.

It was created, the small restaurants in particular, to showcase and enjoy local culture, as well as the various nationalities represented in Dutch Quarter. The restaurants are tied together in their design but feature various flags and menus. Some were well equipped with stocked bars and TVs.

Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs called it "a positive contribution to Dutch Quarter" and "safe for families," adding that it should be supported by the whole community. Member of Parliament Tamara Leonard, in reference to the project's realisation, encouraged the youth to work towards their dreams.

Emilio Kalmera and Rodrigue Richardson dedicated speeches to Lynch, praising his passion and vision.

Current and former MPs Theo Heyliger, Sarah Wescot-Williams, Cornelius de Weever, Leroy de Weever, and Patrick Illidge were also present. MP Leona Marlin hosted the event and along with PM Gumbs, Lynch and his wife Rosina cut the ribbon.

The project started "three ministers ago" as described by Lynch in his vote of thanks, referring to Ministers of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Development and Infrastructure VROMI.

The culture-centred launch included poetry by Tamara Groeneveldt, the St. Maarten song by Timia Jones, a prayer by Reverend Dennis Baptiste, scripture readings by Lynch's children, and a performance by Generation New Status Drum Band.

The West Indian Village is located on Gibbs Drive, opposite Lucky Stars supermarket.
