PHILIPSBURG--The recently established St. Maarten Aquatic Federation (SMAF) announced Tuesday it is now an official member of the world governing body of all aquatic sports, Fédération Internationale de Natation FINA.

"Being a recognised body brings forth a myriad of opportunities for swimmers specifically due to the fact other aquatic sports such as water polo are still to be developed in St. Maarten," SMAF said in a release. "Athletes are now able to participate in regional and international competitions, which will give them much needed exposure. With these opportunities come many responsibilities, rules and regulations that SMAF and its members need to adhere to.

"SMAF will continue to do its utmost to assist in the further development of aquatic sports, but has also acknowledged the fact that there are some challenges that need to be addressed, namely the lack of proper facilities, i.e. a 50-metre pool, diving boards, etc. Despite the challenges faced, SMAF recognises the efforts of all teams to bring the sport to a higher level and will work in the best interest of its members."

All associations that are not members are encouraged to consider membership. Persons and organisations willing to volunteer or make a donation can contact President Jules de Vries at tel. 550-6438 or by sending an email to
