>PHILIPSBURG:--- Minister of Public Housing, Environment, Spatial Planning and Infrastructure (Ministry VROMI) Hon. Maurice Lake said on Thursday that Minister of Public Health Hon. Cornelius de Weever brought it to his attention about tilapia fish in the Rolandus Canal.

Ministry VROMI officials met with the Nature Foundation to find a possible solution with respect to the fish in the canal. Starting on Friday, an effort will be made to remove the fish from the canal.

"The tilapia fish are breeding in the Salt Pond and as the water is pumped from the pond into the canal, they get sucked in at the intake pipe from the storm water pumps.

"A solution needs to be found in order to prevent the fish from entering the canal. Based on a stakeholders meeting on Thursday between Nature Foundation and Ministry VROMI, a net will be placed in the area of the pump intake to prevent the fish from going into the pipe.

"I would like to thank the Minister of Public Health for his input and that of the Nature Foundation as we work together to resolve this matter," Minister Hon. Maurice Lake said on Thursday.
