The Daily Herald

PHILIPSBURG--Three students of National Institute of Arts (NIA) and co-director Clara Reyes will be travelling to Curaçao today, Friday, to participate in the Dutch Caribbean Youth Art Festival. Reyes and students Ray Angel Boasman (12), Zoe van Zadelhoff (12) and Dashan Prince (16) are scheduled to be in Curaçao August 1-10. The three students showcased the material they are to perform in Curaçao before a small audience, which included Prime Minister Sarah
Wescot-Williams
, at John Larmonie Centre on Thursday evening. The three young students recently attended the Art Saves Lives’ Cross-Cultural Artist Exchange in New York and have been working hard during their summer vacation preparing to represent St. Maarten at the Youth Art Festival. The Youth Art Festival is a 10-day exchange programme involving a group of 36 youngsters from the Netherlands, Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius and Saba. Participants will be working for five days to create a multi-disciplinary show, which will be performed twice during the festival at Theatre Centre Luna Blou. The festival includes dance, music, theatre, spoken word, fashion and an exhibition. Apart from the multi-disciplinary show, which will be presented on Friday, August 8 and Saturday, August 9, each country and island also makes its own presentation during the festival. St. Maarten’s 15-minute presentation consists of four pieces, including poetry, song, dance and gymnastics. The presentation will be closed off with a dance choreography featuring all three NIA students. The choreography titled “War†was made in tribute to the 298 persons who died in the crash of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in eastern Ukraine.
