Friendly or Fantasy Island?

Dear Editor,

Some people may call St. Maarten the Friendly Island while others will call it the Fantasy Island but giving the recent political turmoil and political confusion I choose to reserve the right of giving it the appropriate name at the end of this article but not until I express my views on this topic.

Let us for a moment first view the phrases expressed by some of our political leaders and then the phases they allow our island to go through in order to have a better understanding on what island we are living on.

Our good "Samaritan" or leader of government Sarah Wescot-Williams struck the nail on its head when she boldly chose her political phrase. Political phrase: Let's get it right. You can't buy my vote and that phrase earned her DP party two seats. In addition to let's get it right she then called on the Dutch to deal with the corruption that got completely out of hand on the island.

Our good "Samaritan" then went on to publicly chastise and thrashed her comrade Cornelius de Weever for abandoning the DP party to join with the UPP party.

Now comes the crux of the matter of a fact our good "Samaritan" apparently used another phrase like: Let me get it right this time, hit the reverse gear and bolted to the very same UPP party her comrade joined earlier.

This rapid and radical change of heart earned our good "Samaritan" the Presidency of the new puppet Parliament with the blessing of the embattled leader of UPP party Mr. Money Man.

Apparently the DP house stands there now without any chairs oops or seats in the structure after having her pompous and prestigious political days.

Another sprinter is Leona Marlin Romeo or speedy greedy Gonzalez who contradicted earlier rumours of her leaving the US Party. Her whale of a tale story denying back then that the rumours were spread by malicious people who are hell bent on damaging her character or good name.

But her short-lived denial makes her, Sarah Wescot-Williams and Cornelius de Weever very good candidates of whom voters should never ever trust again.

Lack of integrity in our local politicians, scant or scarce confidence and respect in our elected officials, no indication of any change in the mind-set of our political leaders and local politicians, continuity of corruption in government not by Chinese, Indians, Eskimos, Dutchmen etc., but oops by our very own brothers and sisters in government.

So when our very own brothers and sisters with false pride and pretence say that they will clean up the mess they caused which should have never ever happen in the first place enriching themselves at the expense of the poor people is like a promise to comfort a fool.

Some queer questions St. Maarteners are asking Theo while he rants and rage: Are you untouchable, unaccountable and above the law? Who give you that prominent and privilege rights to do as you please? Do St. Maarteners have the right to insight and implementation of the integrity report on corruption on their island? What are Theo and his cronies hiding about the implementation of the integrity report?

Yes Theo our very own corrupt politicians have insulted our people the way they have plundered and pillaged our properties and patrimonies at will for self-enrichment purposes and now we are about to investigate the damages they have caused us. Conclusion: We are certainly not living anymore on the Friendly Island but rather on the Fantasy Island where corruption is entertained, promoted and even rewarded.
