Guests at yesterdays’ cultural manifestation join hands around the peace monument at the Philipsburg Jubilee library as part of activities to commemorate International Peace Day 2014.

St. Maarten’s multicultural aspect was evident yesterday during a colorful cultural manifestation organized by the local arm of the Rotary Club to commemorate International Peace Day with a call “to make this be the one to start the dialogue”.

The celebrations took place at the Philipsburg Jubilee Library kicking off with a moment of silence, followed by the joining of hands for a prayer for peace and “unity among the many cultures from different parts of the world represented here on St. Maarten.”

The director of the library addressed the gathering– which consisted of various ethnic groups, some in traditional dress and represented all ages– and noted that the library was an ideal choice for the peace monument erected by the Rotary Club. In May the Rotary Club unveiled a peace monument at the entrance of the library.

“The library is one of the first places visitors and immigrants to the island come to find information when they arrive here and as such it is fitting that they should be greeted with the peace monument.” She encouraged all present to make St. Maarten a shining example of peace.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the Unesco representative during her address to the audience as she expressed her HOPE for the International Peace Day celebrations. “Make this be the one to start the dialogue.”

At the cultural manifestation cultural organizations displayed their cultures through arts, dances, and music, fashion and peace poems. The cultural manifestation that boasted among other displays, Indian and Egyptian dances was the conclusion of activities organized by the Rotary Club to commemorate International Peace Day, beginning with “a Peace Symposium for Sustainable Development and Nation Building” at the University of St. Martin on Friday.  Government officials, students and service clubs attended this symposium with keynote speaker Richard Blewitt, the UNDP Resident Representative in Trinidad and Tobago.

The highlight of yesterdays’ manifestation was nationals holding hands around the Peace Monument to demonstrate “peace and unity amongst us all.”
