PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - Some 14 political parties, including the Democratic Party, the United People’s party, the United St. Maarten Party and the National Alliance have registered at the Electoral Council as political organizations to contest the scheduled September 26th parliamentary elections.

Initially, there were some 15 parties to contest the elections; however, one party opted to drop out.

One of the parties to take part in the elections and the most recent one to register is the People’s Progressive Alliance, which was recently reintroduced to the people of St. Maarten during a press conference last week.

Speaking to our news department, Chairman of the Electoral Council attorney Bert Hoffman indicated that all registered parties have met the requirements as is stipulated by law to participate in the elections.

However, the financial report of parties that contested the August 29th elections in 2014 are being reviewed.

The 14 political parties to contest the elections, according to the Chairman of the Electoral Council, have been given some time to submit amendments with regards to the list of candidates that they will like to use.
