PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The new parliamentary year 2014/2015 was officially declared open during a solemn ceremony held at the House of Parliament Tuesday morning.

On hand for the occasion were among other invited guests, representatives of the Collectivite, the Judiciary as well as the Council of Ministers.

Speaking on the floor of parliament, and in delivering his traditional speech, His Excellency Governor Eugene Holiday, presented the policy plans of government for the coming year.

Since 10-10-10, it was the 5th time that the Governor was presenting such a map. However, this year, the opening of the parliamentary year was somewhat different, as it took place at the time that government is to be changed following the August 29th parliamentary elections.

It is for this reason the Governor stated that the emphasis of his address will not be on the policy agenda, but rather, on the policy challenges and opportunities for the upcoming year.

Some of those opportunities and challenges were outlined by the Governor whilst delivering his traditional address at the start of the new parliamentary year Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, outgoing president of Parliament, the Honorable drs. Gracita Arrindell said thank you to all. She also told attendees that the meeting was the last she will be presiding over as the chairlady of the institution.

The outgoing president also made use of the opportunity to hit the gravel for a final time, as she closed the meeting Tuesday morning.
