Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten – United People's (UP) Party Leader and Member of Parliament Hon. Theo Heyliger and the UP Party Board would like to thank the people of Sint Maarten for exercising their democratic right to vote on Friday, August 29th when over 14,800 persons made use of their right to vote, bringing the turnout close to 70 per cent.
"I am overwhelmed by the support received where over 6000 voters placed their confidence in the UP Party, making the UP the largest political party in the country. In 2010 as a new party we quickly became the second largest party, and today we are the largest. I would like to express sincere thanks to the over 6000 voters who placed their support and voted UP.
"The UP candidates, board, members, supporters, volunteers and sympathizers all played a role in this major achievement, and I am thankful for having such a great team to work with.
"As you are all aware, developments over the past days will see the UP Party playing its role in Parliament from the opposition benches. We are ready to govern to hold in check and control the decision of the coalition government that is in the making! Our democratic system allows for different political scenarios and those who will have representation in parliament have apparently made their choice.
"I can guarantee the people of our country that the UP seven members that will be taking up their seats in the House of Parliament will be a formidable force to be reckoned with when it comes to the role of keeping the government in check. UP understands the way parliament should work.
"Once again, thank you to the people of our country and to those who placed their confidence in the UP Party, and in the candidates who will be going to parliament. We are ready," Leader of the UP Hon. MP Theo Heyliger said on Monday.
