PHILIPSBURG--Eight students took part in the third Annual Reginald Peters Junior Upholstery Workshop, which took place last week Monday through Friday, and was deemed “a great success” by organisers.

The students, ages 13 through 18, were required to bring their own dining chairs and upholstered them with fabric, foam and other materials provided by Upholstery World.

“It was beautiful to see the before and after of these chairs,” organisers said. “Some chairs also needed sanding and painting, and they did a tremendous job all around.”

The parents were invited to come in on Friday afternoon to see the end result of the one-week workshop on their furniture.

Students gave explanations of what they had learned and spoke about the different tools used, including manual and electrical tools and an air compressor. They also explained the safety measures to their parents.

“Parents were proud of their kids to see what they accomplished and happy at the same time because they got their furniture looking brand new, a win-win situation.”

Julie Jones gave words of encouragement and a short speech about her uncle, the late Junior Peters as she handed out the certificates. Workshop leader June Peters also offered congratulatory words, expressing her satisfaction with their work.

Invited guest Greg Arrindell expressed his admiration for this workshop and informed the students of the different areas in which this knowledge can be put to use, for example auto interiors, boat and yacht interiors, custom drapes and home furniture. He encouraged them to continue experimenting at home. “Practice makes perfect,” he said.

Special recognition was given to Tamara Peters, Dionisio Berroa and Chikita Avila for workshop assistance and encouragement. Parents said they looked forward to future workshops.

Participating students were Cameron Jermin, Achille James, Shakirah Cornett, Emani Gumbs, Kiara Vanterpool, Morena Ignacio, Leomar Vanterpool and Jodian McDonald.
