Unbiased look at the Sint Maarten Elections
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - The 2015 Governors Symposium was held Friday morning at the Westin Resort Conference Center.
The symposium was held under the theme; Governance: The value of checks and balances and sought to give a perspective on the role it plays with the community overall, government and civil society.
His Excellency Governor Eugene Holiday gave the first address in which he brought attention to the role of the governor in fostering checks and balances within the government of St. Maarten.
He stated that that the topic of the symposium was also chosen in a bid to address the ongoing debate within the community of St. Maarten about governance.
Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs in his address stated that the symposium and its theme is a timely one. He noted that Governance as it relates to checks and balances also addresses the relationship between government and various stakeholders.
The Prime Minister also admitted that we have a robust system that is currently guiding the way but that it has not been without its challenges.
One of the important tools in the process of "Good Governance; checks and balances" is that of the corporate governance council.
Mike Alexander former Civil Law Notary addressed the value of checks and balances and the role that the corporate governance council has and is playing.
Alexander also addressed the role of Supervisory Boards, the Share Holder and the role of the Managing Director, an area of checks and balances that is currently being played out on the island.
The media has a very important role to play in the realm of governance. Jan Beaulon, former managing director of the Windward Island Bank addressed the value of checks and balances in civil society.
