Gumbs calls for improved political climate in Kingdom

WILLEMSTAD--St. Maarten Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs called on the countries in the Dutch Kingdom to create a better political climate to make a true contribution to improved relations in the Kingdom, during the opening of the 2015 Kingdom Conference at Curaçao's Santa Barbara Resort on Tuesday.

According to Gumbs, a dispute regulation, which was one of the major topics at Tuesday's conference, would not even be necessary if there were a correct and just political climate in the Kingdom. Positive words at these conferences are merely empty promises if the countries do not live up to them.

"Not much appears of the active display of the added value of the Kingdom or the promoting of the correct political climate despite the positive atmosphere and the nice words in the conclusions, the objective to achieve more cooperation, the regular meetings of the people's representatives and this conference," he said in his address.

The regular accusations of corruption in the St. Maarten Government, the "premature and therefore incorrect use of the instruction instrument or higher supervision" do not contribute to a good political climate either, said Gumbs. "In order to be truly effective, this conference should not only be a positive gathering once a year, it should have a real influence on the political climate."

Gumbs said a dispute regulation and the ruling of an independent higher body on the interpretation of the authorities of the Kingdom Council of Ministers "unfortunately" would remain a necessity as long as the phase of a true positive political climate had not been achieved.
