ORANJESTAD, Aruba – During a recent visit to Aruba, the Board of Financial Supervision for Aruba (CAft) indicated that the utmost must be done in order to meet the maximum acceptable deficit norm.

At this moment, particularly the indirect tax income is lagging well behind under the influence of low economic growth. A Second Chance To Do Things Right

St. James, Marigot – I would like to thank all the voters in St. Martin who came out to vote on the occasion of the 1st round, last Saturday, November 19, of the Primary of the Right and Center.

I also want to thank the voters who voted for Alain Juppé and made it possible for him to earn 128 votes. This placed him in third place and 44 votes behind Nicolas Sarkozy who placed first on Saint Martin, but who was ultimately eliminated from the contest and soundly rejected at both the Overseas and the National level.

François Fillon’s surprising and brilliant performance is to be congratulated and Alain Juppé took precedence in the Overseas Territories while earning 28% of the overall vote Read more

Police Officers In Court

PHILIPSBURG – On July 22, 2016 a group of police officers received their decrees by the Minister of Justice Edson Kirindngo during a ceremony held at Police Headquarters in Philipsburg.

When the officers took a look at their long awaited promotions, they were disappointed. The officers were taken into service early in 2012, during which period they were selected to follow the Basic Police Training (BPO).

However, the cadets were placed in the daily operation of police work instead of sitting on the benches as mentioned in their former decree, which stipulated that they were police cadets in training.

The cadets had never gotten proper training to fulfill their duties as full-fledged police officers, because management team (KPSM) claimed that there was no money in the budget for the BPO Read more

Letter To The Editor By Koos Sneek: Statia’S Budget 2017

The debate in the Island Council on the budget took place on November 14. The most important debate of the year was held without most of us, including myself, having noticed it. This could happen because no official announcement was made through the media.

The island council members were not sent a convocation with an agenda that included the budget 2017 either. An agenda was sent out a little over 24 hours prior to the meeting, but mentioned only the first budget amendment and quarterly report 2016.  Disturbing is that the bylaw required two weeks for scrutiny of the budget by the public was not adhered to Read more

Telem Reports “Healthy” Profit In 2015

~Praises staff for outstanding efforts~

POND ISLAND – TelEm Group has reported a “healthy” profit for 2015 despite dropping local and international call rates, and the widespread use of “free” calling services in St. Maarten.

The profit figure was announced to TelEm Group personnel by Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Helma Etnel, during a general meeting at the Belair Community Center, on Friday, June 17.

According to Etnel, the profits are thanks to the combined efforts of TelEm Group management and personnel in all divisions despite a significant drop in revenues for the year 2015.

“So while we were getting less money in, we were very conservative with spending and using what we had much more efficiently,” said the CFO.

Etnel said the figures could not have come at a better time to boost the morale of personnel, as many negative things are being reported about the company in online and print media – a development that the CFO regrets.

She urged personnel and managers not to dwell on these negative reports, but to remember all the positive things they have done over the past several years to make the company viable, and to continue to provide jobs for St Read more

The Minister Of Education Is Always An Educator At Heart

PHILIPSBURG – The Minister of Education is, and always has been an educator at heart, and is solely motivated by this fact to work together with others to bring improvements to education in order to meet the needs of our population.

It is rather disappointing that an initiative such as Education on the Move (EOM), aimed at bringing much needed awareness about education and collaboration within the community, is being touted by the opposition as a political move, especially seeing their recent, obvious interference in ongoing discussions in education, as well as the school bussing issue.
