My colleagues and the people of St. Maarten a very pleasant good afternoon.
In commemorating October 10, 2010, instinctively as a public servant you start to think about your role. You are de facto part of the government and governing, so you reflect and look ahead from that premise. As public servants, however, there are times when you get so caught up in your bubble of working day and night for your people that occasionally you forget that the best gauge of information about your country is a five-minute discussion with any citizen Read more

PHILIPSBURG:--- As we mark the 10th anniversary of the day St. Maarten became an autonomous country within the Kingdom of The Netherlands on October 10, 2010, otherwise known as 10-10-10 that Chinese saying comes to mind: A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.

How far have we traveled on this journey? What is our destination? And when and why did we take that first step? We would have to search our history to find the answers to these and other relevant questions. But let me say, without any fear of contradiction, that we have journeyed far, however, we still have much farther to go, if we are to reach the Promised Land.

Contrary to what some people might argue, our journey as a nation did not start with the two referenda we held in 1994 and the year 2000 respectively: it actually started over 400 years ago when our ancestors were kidnapped, uprooted from their motherland and forcibly brought here to the New World as enslaved labor.

We have been struggling since then for freedom and have scored some significant victories that allow us today to contemplate the future with hope Read more

Food For Thought (Part Ii)

UPDATED FOOD FOR THOUGHT (PART II): I am an eternal optimist. The glass is always half full rather than half empty. My Letter to the Editor of April 9, 2020, entitled FOOD FOR THOUGHT in which I concluded THIS COUNTRY STATUS EXPERIMENT HAS FAILED, for some may have been considered out of character for me. But, the forced business closure due to COVID-19 required by Government (a move I endorsed and applauded), while business owners still have to operate under the yoke of 50-year-old archaic Labor Laws, do that to a person! How is it POSSIBLE or FAIR that owners and managing directors of Private Sector businesses remain TOTALLY responsible for 100% of the full salaries of ALL their employees, while sales have mandatorily been reduced to ZERO by the very Government that enforces those archaic Labor Laws? WHERE IS THE SOCIAL CATCH NET THAT ANY RESPONSIBLE COUNTRYS GOVERNMENT SHOULD HAVE IN PLACE IN CASE OF DISASTERS?

Having to cut back salaries to stay afloat, while the government hemmed and hawed about a previously agreed-upon 10% cut of their salaries, was the drop that caused my bucket of frustration to run over Read more

Mp Buncamper Questions The Whereabouts Of The Time Share Ordinance.

PHILIPSBURG, Sint Maarten — A report in the daily media of a verdict from the Supreme Court that referred to the Time Share Ordinance of St. Maarten has prompted

United St. Maarten Party (USP) Member of Parliament (MP) and faction leader, Claudius Toontje Buncamper to question the

Minister of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Transport and Telecommunications (TEATT), the honorable Ludmila de Weever on the exact whereabouts of the ordinance.

In his letter to the Minister, MP Buncamper stated that to this day there is no clear indication where the law is and when it will pass.

Research has shown that the law was passed in parliament in February 2017 and was forwarded to the governor for ratification.

The MP further stated that due some technical terms between the Dutch and English languages that did not correspond with each other, the law was sent back to government.

The MP fired off a number of questions to the Minister, asking what is the present status of the law and where exactly is it?

The MP also questioned if the necessary changes have been made to the ordinance as was indicated by for Minister Melissa Doncher-Arrindell in late 2017 to early 2018.

Is it the intention of the present government to still finalize the law and send it for ratification once the corrections are made?,

MP Buncamper queried in his letter to the minister, while he enquired about the intended timeline to have the law put on the books.
