Close matches mark school soccer tourney

BELVEDERE--Xabel Dias scored five times as Combine Silly Shooters faced Sister Regina's New Stars in the "Nine and Under" division of the 23rd edition of the Interscholastic Soccer Tournament at the Cruyff Court in Belvedere, Saturday. Silly Shooters won 7-0 with Quincy Busby good for one goal and three assists.

The tournament is organised by the St. Maarten Soccer Educational Foundation (SMSEF) and sponsored by the TelEm Group of Companies. The competition features 44 teams representing 10 elementary schools plus five more schools feed into the combined teams.

Fielding players turned out to be a problem for some teams due to road closures for the NAGICO to NAGIO Cycle race.

Sharky Nowek netted three balls and added an assist to propel Learning Unlimited past Leonald Connor 6-2.

At the half the score was knotted at two all. Omario Jones and Anthony Gumbs scored for Connor.

Sister Magda Energetics shot past Sister Regina Masters 4-2. The game was tied at 1-1 at the half. Safin Basir was the driving force scoring all four goals for Energetics with help of Ishmael Abrams who was good for one assist. Alexander Mulder scored two for Masters.

Sr. Magda Athletics vs Charles Leopold Bell: result 6–4 (at halftime 3–1). Top scorers Sr. Magda Athletics: Amani Vanterpool and Gianni Fer both with three goals and one assist. Top scorer Charles Leopold Bell: Bernardo Nisbeth-Lopez with three goals and one assist.

Charles Leopold Bell started strong in the second half trying to close the gap of the first half and managed to come close. Sr. Magda Athletics, however, recognized the danger, regrouped and scored some additional goals to secure the lead.

Sister Magda FC squeezed past Leonald Connor 4-3 in the 11 and under division. Jamir Cuvalay scored four goals in the wining effort; the fourth goal was off a penalty. Tyrese Whyte netted two and Drae Murray added one for the Connor Team. The game was close, the score was 1-1 at the break and with only seconds before the final whistle the match was knotted at 3-3.

In the battle of undefeated teams in the 11 and under group, Noah Ledee scored two goals and Jan Lucas van der Plas and Oliver Hobgood each added one as Learning Unlimited Goal Machines squeezed past Sister Regina Goal Getters 4-3. Reshawn Eustase netted twice and Richard Day had one goal and an assist for Sister Regina Goal Getters.

Sister Regina United defeated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 5-3. Tomas Bouman scored three for United and Malachi Serrant had three for the King School.

Leonald Connor shut out SXM Schools United 4–0 after leading 1–0 at the break. Two goals were scored by Isael Medina-Bran while Durvane Solomon and Gamy Charles each added one goal and an assist to the tally.

Ricardo Somers scored four as Ruby Labega squeezed past Charles Leopold Bell 4–3. The game looked over at the break as Ruby Labega had already established a 4-1 lead. Abijah Adamson scored twice and Trace Fisher netted one for the Bell Team. Team mate Paul Attyl contributed two assists.

Genevieve de Weever appeared to be dominating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School with a 5-1 halftime lead, but King battled back. However, De Weever prevailed 7-5; Jamard Fleming netted three for De Weever and D'Angelo Thompson had three for King.

The final game of the day, Game 11, was a blow out. Jeremy Hooi had seven goals and Jolian Peterson added six as Sister Magda United Stars shot past Oranje Combine 17 – 0.
