Island Gems helps Animal Defenders

PHILIPSBURG--Island Gems Charity Foundation presented a cheque to Animal Defenders SXM recently to assist with neuter operations, vaccinations and other medical cost for stray animals.

The cheque for NAf. 900 was written to a veterinary clinic in keeping with Island Gems' policy of not giving money directly to any organisation. Island Gems prefers to pay for services or buy necessary items.

"We are all delighted and very thankful to the Island Gems. The money will be wisely used," said Mercedes De Windt of Animal Defenders on receiving the cheque for the vet from long-time Island Gems member Anita "Anu" Amarnaney.

The all-women Island Gems Foundation raises the money to support organisations such as Animal Defenders at its single annual fundraiser. This year's dinner, themed "Caribbean Creole," will be held at Captain Oliver's restaurant on Saturday, March 28.

Well-known St. Maarten performer Leroy "King Beau Beau" Brooks has volunteered his services as master of ceremonies for the dinner. Tickets cost US $125 each and are available from all Island Gems members.

Meanwhile, Animal Defenders is constantly in need of food donations. A daily pet-food drive was started recently at supermarkets and groceries and has received much support from residents.

Animal Defenders is fostering two female dogs with litters. Permanent adoption homes and or temporary foster homes for the puppies are being sought for when they are old enough to be vaccinated and leave their mother. When the puppies have been weaned, the mother dog will be spayed. To assist Animal Defenders call 553-3116.
