Second Pointe Blanche water tank completed

PHILIPSBURG--Utilities Company GEBE will soon have more storage capacity, thanks to the completion of the second water tank in Pointe Blanche.

The utilities company is expected to put the second tank in operation soon. The first tank is already in operation. Both tanks will serve as reservoirs for the water produced by seawater reverse osmosis plant built in the "Yellow Building" at the Harbour Cargo premises.

The tanks are connected to GEBE's water distribution system and supply drinking water to the community. Each tank has a capacity of 3,000m3. The total increase in capacity of tank storage of 6,000m3 equals 20 per cent of the presently installed tank capacity.

A three-way agreement between government, GEBE and Air-Fin/Seven Seas Water was signed in August 2012, specifying detailed arrangements of the supply, installation, commissioning, operation and ownership of two water tanks. The three- way agreement is a sub agreement of the Water Supply (production) Agreement between government and Air-Fin/Seven Seas Water for 2008 - 2018. The site is located uphill on the road to Monte Vista and is commonly known as the Pot Rum site.

Former health minister Cornelius de Weever, who had been responsible for the production and distribution of drinking water, representatives of GEBE management Romelio Maduro and Rene Gartner and the management of Seven Seas Water Franklyn Richards visited the site where the second tank was built, last Thursday.

The former minister said the completion represented "a milestone." He said it was important to have the necessary infrastructure in place for the supply of drinking water for the current and the next generation, "which is essential to guaranteed public health."
