PARIS/ MARIGOT:-- Residents on St. Martin should avoid shaking hands, kissing people when greeting them and also wash their hands constantly to avoid the spread of the COVID-19 says Dr. Jan Cedric Hansen who is a member of the Foundation des Catastrophes.Dr. Hansen said at least 80% of persons infected with the Coronavirus (COVID-19) do not know they are infected and that these persons may just experience mild flu-like symptoms such as body aches, muscle pains, and fever, while there are some that will not have any symptoms. Of the other 20%, Dr. Hansen said these people may end up at a hospital for treatment and since there is no specific treatment for the COVID-19 they will be treated with symptomatic treatment. At the moment France has not declared the COVID-19 a pandemic but it will become one as there are over 100 confirmed cases in France. On Sunday morning the Agence de Sante (ARS) confirmed that there are 3 confirmed cases of the COVID-19 from St. Barthelemy, one of the infected is confined at home while two are hospitalized at the Louis Constant Fleming Hospital. It should be noted that these three persons are related. Dr. Hansen said that residents of St. Maarten/ St. Martin have a lot to their advantage to contain the virus, he said it is advisable to keep windows open or increase ventilation in homes while surfaces must be cleaned quite often, doorknobs and other surfaces must be cleaned constantly while hands are to be washed every hour. He said St. Martin is tropical so keeping doors and windows open will be the best and easiest thing to do. Dr. Hansen warned that the COVID-19 has no borders and that cases will spring up everywhere in the world, he said that while people are scared and some are in a panic, the COVID-19 gives flu-like symptoms and must be treated as influenza, infected persons should also confine themselves at home to limit the spread. The ARS advised persons that persons who believe they contracted the COVID -19 should dial 15 and isolate themselves at home. They are also advised to wear masks when they are ill. Infected persons should stay at least one meter fifty apart and avoid putting their hands to their faces since this is one of the ways the virus spreads.
