St. Maarten News —It has become quite obvious that the St. Maarten Medical Center is in dire need of space for patients since they are currently placing male and female patients in the same ward. When the institution was contacted, they informed this newspaper that they need to get the questions submitted to them on this issue in writing before they can give a comment on the issue.

The former United People’s Party leader Theo Heyliger had said in his campaign during the last elections that he would have had the new hospital built urgently. He also had plans to ensure that the necessary doctors and specialists were also recruited to run the institution properly. To date nothing has been done.

This initiative was applauded as one of the best, since the government has been spending millions of guilders to send patients abroad for treatment especially to Curacao, the Dominican Republic and Colombia among other countries.

During the visit to the SMMC this newspaper was told that this was apparently the case in hospitals in the Netherlands and other parts of the world and as a result, it was nothing new. However speaking with some members of the public they have insisted that this is not normal and said they would vehemently refuse to be placed in the same hospital ward with persons of the opposite sex.

The Minister of Health Emile Lee when contacted said this is the first time that he has heard of such he promised to give an update after he meets with the director of the institution.
