Drug Awearness Campaign Being Launched In Schools

PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten - Drug Awareness month is being observed this month, and the theme for this year’s Drug Awareness month is “Let’s Develop Our Lives, Community and Identity without Drugs’.

This year’s Drug Awareness month 2016 and prevention is also a major topic of debate throughout the Caribbean region. That subject was also a point of discussion by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs, the Honorable Silveria Jacobs during the Council of Ministers press briefing on Wednesday.

In addressing this matter, the Minister also spoke of Marijuana which remains a major point of contention on the island. She also made clear that Marijuana still remains illegal. According to her, the Ministry in collaboration with the division of inspection is working on a meeting with all the schools that have indicated that they have a problem with drugs infiltration at their institutions.

It is the priority of the Minister to set a uniformed policy, which will also include as to how the matter will be dealt with. Recently, a student found with the drug “Molly’ at one of the high schools was detained.

The drug which is being process in China is said to be very dangerous and can also cause serious health issues. That subject was also addressed by the Minister on Wednesday as well. 

According to Minister Jacobs, an awareness campaign is needed to be kicked off regarding the practice of using drugs and the effect it can have on one’s life.
