PHILIPSBURG--It is “a shame” that former Mullet Bay Beach Resort property is still the same way as it was when Hurricane Luis devastated the island 20 years ago, United People’s (UP) party deputy leader Member of Parliament (MP) Franklin Meyers said in the last meeting of the 2014-2015 Parliamentary Year on Monday.

St. Maarten/St. Martin has been reflecting on the devastation wrought by the category five hurricane on September 5, 1995, for several days now.

Meyers’ reflection formed part of his speech at the close of the legislative year. He said the lack of redevelopment of Mullet Bay property is a “direct result” of an investor having “more money” than government to affect change.

The Mullet Bay property has been a talking point for politicians on both sides of the political divide. Over the years, there have been many promises made about the possible redevelopment of the property. But, to date there has been no concrete plans from the property owner or from government to jumpstart the project.

Mullet Bay Resort in its heyday was one of the biggest employers on the island. It was one of the primary sources of promotion and income for the destination.
