Escalated fight leads to shots fired near harbour

Source: The Daily Herald 21 Jul 2015 06:23 AM

POINTE BLANCHE--A fight between taxi drivers, most likely illegal drivers, right outside the gates of Port St. Maarten escalated mid-last week and two shots reportedly were fired.

Detectives are working the case, confirmed acting police spokesperson Inspector Steven Carty. However, he said the details were still sketchy and no arrests had been made.

Police were called to the scene after the shots were fired. Further details were unavailable to Carty at the time he was contacted, but reportedly there were no injuries. Some cruise tourists were seen rushing back onto harbour grounds at the time of the incident.

There has been longstanding concern over the illegal public transportation providers, or so-called "gypsies," expressed by the public, government, the harbour and legal taxi drivers, especially when it comes to safety and the potential to affect tourism. Scuffles are not uncommon and there have been assaults in the past, leading to much public discussion on safety and regulation.

Port Chief Executive Officer Mark Mingo could not be reached for comment.
